Website Speed and Why It Matters for Lead Generation
The Speed Tax
Google research shows that 53% of mobile users abandon a site that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. For contractor websites — where the majority of traffic is mobile — this is brutal.
I've audited dozens of contractor websites, and the average load time is over 6 seconds. That means more than half of potential leads are leaving before they even see your content.
What Slows Sites Down
1. Oversized images — A single uncompressed photo can be 5MB+. Resize and compress every image. 2. Too many plugins/scripts — Every WordPress plugin adds weight. Most template builders load 15+ scripts you don't need. 3. Cheap hosting — Shared hosting for $5/month means your site shares server resources with hundreds of others. 4. No caching — Without browser caching, every page load starts from scratch.
The Fix
When I build sites, speed is non-negotiable. I use optimized frameworks, compress all images, lazy-load below-the-fold content, and use fast hosting. My contractor sites typically load in 1-2 seconds.
The result? Lower bounce rates, higher conversion rates, and better Google rankings (Google uses site speed as a ranking factor).
